"Torquay" (c1883) |

Many passersby have admired this elegant home over the past century and now it’s time to hand ownership to another. Originally built in 1883, Torquay is a classic example of Queensland houses built in Sandgate around that time. In 1982, when the current owners purchased Torquay, the property bore little resemblance to the original home. It had been converted into three flats, walls had been removed, ceilings lowered and replaced with plasterboard, the wrap around verandah had been enclosed and external cladding lined with fibro. With the assistance of the National Trust of Queensland, the owners set about the daunting task of determining the original layout. Once this was known, they painstakingly scraped back, removed, replaced and lovingly restored the home back to its original splendour. In 1988 the owners were rewarded for their hard work by winning the prestigious John Herbert Award for Excellence in Heritage Conservation, a credit to their restorative work. Listed on the Heritage Register, Torquay is set to enrich our history for a long time to come.
The outdoor areas have their own unique features including a bomb shelter, previously used as a smoke house. The external laundry and two car tandem garage hug the leafy back yard and when you venture back around to the front of the home, the wide open vistas of Bramble Bay await you. The 180º water views extend to Moreton Island and provide spectacular sunrises, moonrises and ever-changing colours reflecting across the bay for your year round pleasure.
