Former Prime Minister Paul Keating is reputed to have to given Ross Village the title of “Tasmania’s Finest Heritage Village” principally because of its exceptional collection of colonial sandstone buildings of which the Ross Bakery Inn is an outstanding example. Convict built in 1832 for John Dickinson, a free settler from Nottinghamshire, England the Ross Bakery Inn is a classic Georgian house built from locally-quarried Ross sandstone with permanent listing on the Tasmanian Heritage Register. It is believed to have been originally named the Sherwood Castle Inn and served for many years as a coaching inn and horse change station for travellers on the Hobart Road. The Ross Bakery Inn takes its present name from Ross Village’s original Bakery which has operated alongside the Inn for over 150 years. The Ross Bakery Inn stands in approx ¾ acre of grounds with a 130 foot frontage to Church Street, the main street of the Village. The buildings (all of Ross sandstone) comprise the main 2 storey building, a fully functioning bakery with a renovated antique wood-fired oven and various smaller outbuildings at the rear. Of particular interest for further development are the stables complex; one wing has been beautifully converted for use as a conference/meeting venue; the central coach house has been partially converted and is used principally for storage; whilst the third wing remains in un-restored original condition with cobbled stone flooring and the remnants of horse tack racking on the walls. The property has been continuously occupied for over 170 years and has served variously as a hotel, a private residence and for the past 20 years as a highly regarded 3½ star heritage B&B guest house. Accommodation comprises 3 upstairs bedrooms- each with an ensuite bathroom- downstairs lounge and breakfast room, and a self-contained attached owner/manager’s private residence. There is also a small separate 3 bedded “backpackers” room at the back of the house. The property also includes an annexe which houses the Ross Village Bakery, Ross’s original bakery with its wood-fired brick oven (fully rebuilt in 2005). The Bakery operates as a Café/Bakery specialising in wood-fired sourdough breads and exceptional pastries. Over the past 15 years under its present ownership the Bakery has built up a fine reputation as the place for travellers to take a break on the Hobart to Launceston highway.
