History

Ranelagh was built in 1875 for Joshua Gill who wanted to accommodate his large family of 10 children.

Gill owned the first general store in Dubbo, The Overland Store.

Ranelagh was built in a stately manner, which is unrivalled in Dubbo, even by today’s standards, to reflect Gill’s status as a prosperous local merchant.

Historic Ranelagh is a 650 square metre, single storey, double brick home situated on 8.15 acres opposite the Macquarie River.

Although it retains most of its original features Ranelagh was totally and sympathetically restored over a period of 3 years in consultation with a heritage architect to ensure authenticity and comfortable 20th century living was achieved.

The formal lounge features two black imported Italian marble fireplaces and enormous original local red cedar bi-fold doors.

The original ceilings, which are all up to 12 feet high (3.7m) are still in perfect condition, some featuring tongue and groove Australian timber and others intricate plasterwork with antique light fittings.

Until 2004 Ranelagh was used as a private home by owner Peter Arantz and is now open to discerning guests as luxurious 19th century style accommodation and is currently available for purchase.
