Own a Piece of History

Built in the early 1830s is this historic cottage which was leased to Caroline Chisholm, one of only two women worthy enough to grace the notes of our currency.

It was used as a hostel for immigrant women (established in March 1842), On the 11th November 1842 the committee changed the house into a medical hospital and it became known as the Maitland Benevolent Asylum. In 1843 the size of the building proved to be inadequate and the Asylum was moved to a new location.

Since 1843 the Immigrants’ Home’s history has been rather inconsequential and its significance is related, mostly, to those early years. However, the building does have features which are related to events that affected the whole area.

Today the building known as 3 Mill Street East Maitland is a home and provides an opportunity for a lucky buyer to purchase their own piece of history.

The home has 3 large bedrooms, a dressing room, kitchen and dining area, lounge room plus an internal bathroom and laundry. Outside there is a fully fenced yard and a single garage.
