Ryedale Estate was acquired in 1840 by Major Edward Darvall, formerly of the 19th & 9th Light Dragoons and was named by him after the district of Ryedale in Yorkshire.
The stone used in the erection of the building came from a quarry on Kent’s grant and a man named Fitzgerald, an escapee from Van Dieman’s Land being the stonemason. Edward died in 1869, aged 93, leaving a widow (Jane) and 8 children. Jane stayed on in the home until a year before her death in 1899 she handed over the home to her son Anthony. When Anthony and his wide Kate moved into the home they had 9 children ranging in age from 17 -31. The Darvall family begand subdividing the 300 acres of land and eventually a small parcel was sold to the Anglican Church around 1930. Ryedale House was used as the rectory until early 1970s – it was then purchased by Mr and Mrs Peel who removed it stone by stone, meticulously rebuilding the grand old residence on 28 acres of glorious surroundings in the Paterson Valley. The cedar came from Richmond River in long planks, of high quality being used in windows, doors as can still be seen in the home today.
