Redstone, also known as Winter House was designed and built for The Winter Family by Walter Burley Griffin, architect, landscape architect and town planner. The house was completed in 1935 and was the last house designed by Griffin to be built in Australia. It is the most intact Griffin house, still in the possession of the original family, who has maintained it largely in its original state. Overall restorative works were last undertaken in 2008 under the supervision of Ian Stapleton, heritage architect.

Built from locally quarried sandstone, it incorporated, for its era, innovative ideas such as open plan living. It has 4 bedrooms, each with its own wash basin. Sited on a 1423 sq m block, its gracious garden has many magnificent feature trees, including a rare multi trunk phoenix canariensis palm.

Redstone has been widely recognised as a house of historic and cultural significance. It was listed on the State Heritage Register in January 2009 adding to listings on the Register of National Estate, National Trust of Australia, and it is on the RAIA Register of 20th Century Buildings of Significance. Original Griffin plans, specifications and early photographs, including those of building in progress, still exist.

As the centenary of Walter Burley Griffin’s winning design for Canberra draws near, there is renewed interest in his life and work, his town and community planning and his architecture, including his domestic designs. Of all the Griffin houses, Redstone is unique. There have been no substantial alterations.

After almost three quarters of a century, Redstone is ripe for new directions. An adjacent vacant block on separate title is also available. There is ample potential for sympathetic upgrade and further development as an elegant residence or for other uses such as professional suites, with appropriate approvals.
