Regarding this very special location, a recent report noted...

Eaglehawk: community and heritage in the past, present and future

The public buildings of Eaglehawk clustered at the foot of the High Street hill are remarkable. First-time visitors to Eaglehawk, crossing Victoria Street and traveling down the hill through the shopping precinct, are struck by a pleasing visual aspect: the triangular open space of Brassey Square and, behind the Square, the facades of three substantial, nineteenth century brick buildings - Eaglehawk's former Post Office, Town Hall and Mechanics' Institute.

The general topography of the vicinity, the architecture, solidity and heritage characteristics of the four buildings, their configuration in close proximity and their representation of the early establishment of four core public functions of civil society at the local level make this area a unique cluster of civic buildings and surroundings. It is doubtful that any other township or neighbourhood in Victoria, or even in Australia, has as its civic centre such a concentrated, durable physical legacy of public sphere nineteenth century community settlement and development. Not visible to the visitor, but equally important in this unique legacy, is the intangible heritage of meanings and associations of these buildings. These were the buildings around and through which residents formulated their sense of identity as the people of Eaglehawk, their sense of community and pride in that community....

The report focuses on the present and future uses of the three publicly owned buildings - the Town Hall, the Mechanics' Institute and the Court House. The key recommendation of this report is that these become the nucleus of an Eaglehawk Cultural & Heritage Precinct.
