Eaglehawk is an historic town located six kilometers to the west of the Bendigo CBD. With a population of approximately 8, 000 people. it was. formerly an independent municipality. Today it is a suburb with a distinct identity, unique features and a strong sense of community. (City of Greater Bendigo, 2005)

Originally designed as a three bedroom residence attached to the Post & Telegraph Office, the former Eaglehawk Post Office building offers a gracious setting for business and/or residential uses.

Erected c1874 as a double storey building in a plain Georgian style, it uses hand-made bricks in its triple brick external walls and double brick internal walls. It stands on substantial granite block foundations which are apparently five feet deep (1.5 metres) according to the original plans. Single stores additions in c1903 and c1911 added a lounge room and a relocated residential entrance to the side, and expansion of the post office and mail room areas. Ceilng height is 14 feet approximately, whilst some joinery such as the stair rails is in cedar though most appears to be of select pine.

The building is situated in a supreme position overlooking Brassey Square, and right next door to the former Eaglehawk Town Hall which is currently used by the star Cinema as an arthouse cinema. Behind the adjacent Mechanics' Institute is the old Court House, now housing the Historical Society, and the substantial log lockup.

Right opposite there is the well-kept and large Canterbury Park, through which one may walk about 200 metres to the Leisure Centre and the two large lakes which locals use for exercise purposes. The town centre with its wide range of shops is a similar short walk away whilst the train station is equally convenient in another direction. The nearby Bendigo CBD offers a further range of businesses and heritage.

Annually these same areas are used for the most enjoyable Eaglehawk Dahlia & Arts Festival which draws large crowds each March, and involves a very wide cross-section of the community.

Brassey Square is used for important celebrations such as Australia Day, when the cannon is fired, Anzac Day and the Dahlia & Arts Festival activities.
