This unique stone church building holds THE prominent position in the village of Carrington, on the banks of Port Stephens, being in pristine condition with no evident structural faults, showing the craftsmanship of the era. Presently in private ownership with the building history dating back to 1846, the architect is believed to be Thomas Laman with famous Laman Street in Newcastle being named in his honour for the contribution to the colony of Newcastle.
The interior is a gothic medieval design with 75cm stone walls, the ceiling is an excellent example of hammer beam truss, made from beautiful cedar timber, which allows the ceiling to be open to the ridge giving high and spacious appearance. Australia Agriculture Company, established in 1824, owned large portions of surrounding land with the headquarters in Tahlee. AA Co built and were the first owner of the Carrington church, handing over ownership to the Anglican Diocese in 1851. The first bishop of Newcastle, William Tyrell, consecrated the church as the Church of Holy Trinity on 5th May 1851. In 1853 the AA Co moved headquarters to Stroud, and this drastically reduced local population. The church was closed in 1862, laying dormant until it was restored in 1888 by Hon RHD White from his personal finances and it was rededicated as Saint Andrews. The church closed again in 1949, once again, laying idle until the Australian Youth Hostel Association started using the building from August 1965 until 1992. After this, the building was sold to private owners. Set on a level 1 acre block of land surrounded by the original 1888 picket fence in the picturesque Carrington / Tahlee district only 45 minutes from Newcastle and 15 minutes from Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest. Opportunities abound with options for a business, tourism, studio or private home, there are modern kitchen and bathroom facilities on site.
