History:
This grand old building was built in 1896 and is situated in Aberdeen NSW in the heart of the Hunter Valley. Built by Murdo McKenzie as the first of his group of six country stores. It flourished as McKenzie and Sons till 1914. Upon his death it was bought by M. Campbell and Co of Muswellbrook. Campbells were able to double the size of the business by building a mirror image of the existing building to the northern side. The building now has a 26m frontage and 24m depth which sits on land of 3600 square metres between the New England Highway and the Great Northern Railway line.
Description
The older part of the building is triple brick and all details from its first days have remained. Completely re roofed about 12 years ago. Within the southern side of the building to the rear has been constructed a two story residence containing 12 substantial rooms and including 3 bedrooms. This addition has been done mostly from reclaimed materials and although only 35 years old is completely in keeping with the history of the building.
Currently a second hand business the site lends itself to many uses due to the traffic flow, ample parking and sheer scale of the building.
Location
Aberdeen is within the Upper Hunter Shire and is located between Scone to the north and Muswellbrook to the south. The population is roughly 1500 residents and the area is known for its horse businesses, wine making and coal industries.
